Pelosi applauding Trump becomes meme on social media
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) emphatic applause in response to President Trump calling for an end to “revenge politics” quickly became one of the more memorable images of Tuesday’s State of the Union address.
Pelosi, clad in all white and seated behind Trump, was stoic for most of the speech, making her burst of applause all the more noteworthy.

The image of Pelosi, with her eyebrows raised and looking directly at Trump, became an internet sensation.

Pelosi applauded and joined in several standing ovations, including ones for war veterans who were recognized by Trump during his more than hourlong speech.
At other times, Pelosi could be seen motioning for Democrats to quiet down, like when they groaned at some of Trump’s remarks regarding migrants.
Pelosi has proved to be an effective Democratic counterweight to Trump since Democrats won back the House in November. She and other Democratic leaders recently refused to meet Trump’s demand for more than $5 billion in funding for a proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, leading a standoff that resulted in a 35-day partial government shutdown that ended Jan. 25.
After the government fully reopened without any wall funding, many commentators on both sides of the aisle said Pelosi emerged as the victor in the shutdown showdown.
