Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), one of President Trump’s harshest critics in Congress, called it “inappropriate” that the hashtag #TrumpFail was trending after the president’s summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
“The hashtag #TrumpFail is trending and I find it inappropriate,” Lieu tweeted. “People should not be hoping the President fails or taking pleasure in his failure on the global stage. Whether you like [Trump] or not, he represents America in foreign affairs.
“We want America to succeed.”
Trump and Kim ended their second meeting early on Thursday morning without reaching an agreement on denuclearization.
{mosads}The president said in a press conference that the two leaders failed to reach a deal due to Kim’s demand for the U.S. to lift all sanctions on North Korea in exchange for denuclearization.
“We couldn’t do that,” Trump said. “They were willing to denuke a large portion of the areas we wanted, but we couldn’t give up all of the sanctions for that.”
“Sometimes you have to walk,” Trump added. “This was one of those times.”
Lieu has positioned himself as a staunch adversary of Trump’s policies but has at times offered rare support for the president, including backing his decision to withdraw U.S. forces from Syria.
