Maxine Waters: Trump ‘has done everything that one could even think of to be eligible for impeachment’

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) slammed President Trump Friday, saying he has “done everything that one could even think of” to trigger an impeachment vote in the House.

“I’ve always believed that if the information about this president and his involvement with Russia and [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and the oligarchs and the Kremlin and if we — but look at [special counsel Robert] Mueller’s report and see where he clearly defines that he’s obstructed justice, that people will increasingly come to the conclusion that impeachment is inevitable,” Waters, a vocal Trump critic and the chair of the House Financial Services Committee, said on CNN.

Waters has supported impeaching Trump for months, tweeting in January that it was “Past time for impeachment!” and saying in March the president has “No honesty” and “No patriotism.”

Her panel is currently participating in House Democrats’ widespread oversight efforts into the White House, issuing a subpoena along with the House Intelligence Committee last month to Deutsche Bank and several other financial institutions asking for information about Trump’s finances and any dealings between the banks and Russia.

The White House has waged a resistance campaign to any subpoena coming from the House, refusing to allow officials to testify or submit any documents to the Democratic-controlled committees.

Trump has fired back at Waters over her criticism, dubbing her “low IQ” and using her as a foil during campaign rallies.

Waters’s calls for impeachment have largely fallen on deaf ears among the House leadership, which has warned of possible partisan backlash and the potential it has to consolidate Trump’s base. However, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) appeared to crack open the door this week to the prospect.

“We have to exhaust every other remedy on the way and again use the tools at our disposal even if that means saying one possible use of this investigation might be impeachment, even though I don’t want to go to that place,” she said.

“I don’t know if Nancy Pelosi is moving closer, but I suspect the information is becoming overwhelming,” Waters responded Friday. “I’m hopeful that the American public will support impeachment.”
