Pelosi met with cries of ‘impeach’ at California Democratic convention

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was met with chants of “impeach” during her remarks at the California Democratic Party’s convention on Saturday.

While discussing what special counsel Robert Mueller’s report showcased and what President Trump could be “covering up,” shouts of “impeach” began to ring out. The shouts grew somewhat louder as she called for investigating Trump’s “welcoming of the assault on our democracy.”

“This isn’t about politics, it isn’t about partisanship, Democrats versus Republicans, no,” Pelosi said. “It’s about patriotism, it’s about the sanctity of the Constitution and it’s about the future of our nation. We will go where the facts lead us. We will insist on the truth. We will build an ironclad case to act.”

Pelosi told California Democrats at the event that Congress would continue its efforts to investigate the Trump administration. Her comments came as calls for an impeachment inquiry grow inside the Democratic Party.

Many House Democrats responded to Mueller’s public statement about his investigation last week by calling for an impeachment inquiry to be launched. Mueller’s investigation did not find sufficient evidence to conclude a conspiracy took place between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia.

However, the report noted he could not reach a conclusive determination on whether Trump obstructed justice.

Mueller said last week that if his team “had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said that.”

Pelosi has continued to call for further investigating the president before reaching a decision on whether to launch an impeachment inquiry.
