GOP polling: Impeachment unpopular in swing districts

Impeaching President Trump is unpopular in some swing districts, according to Republican polling obtained by Politico Playbook Monday.

The polling by the National Republican Congressional Committee identified five battleground districts where voters were opposed to impeachment.

{mosads}California’s 21st, 39th and 45th, Georgia’s 6th and New Jersey’s 7th congressional district all had support for impeachment at 35 percent or lower in the poll.

Opposition to impeachment in those five districts was between 57 and 60 percent.

“Impeachment is not popular in suburban battleground districts carried by both President Trump and [2016 Democratic nominee] Hillary Clinton,” the NRCC concluded.

The polling of 400 likely voters in each district during late June comes as the Democratic Party is increasingly divided on impeachment.

Recent national polling on impeachment shows opposition outpacing support as well. According to Gallup, 53 percent of Americans are opposed to initiating the process, while 45 percent support doing so.

Despite a growing number of Democrats calling for impeachment after former special counsel Robert Mueller outlined multiple incidents of possible obstruction of justice against Trump, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has maintained she will not yet begin proceedings.

Mueller is set to testify in front of Congress on July 17.

Representatives from two of the surveyed districts, Katie Porter (D) from California’s 45th and Tom Malinowski (D) from New Jersey’s 7th, have publicly backed impeachment proceedings.

The other three districts highlighted are represented by Reps. T.J. Cox (D-Calif.), Gil Cisneros (D-Calif.) and Lucy McBath (D-Ga.)
