Group of House Democrats reportedly attended the White House ball
A group of six Democratic lawmakers reportedly attended the White House congressional ball on Thursday night as partisan divisions expand while the House moves forward with articles of impeachment.
Axios reported Friday that Democratic Reps. Antonio Delgado (N.Y.), Susie Lee (Nev.), Elaine Luria (Va.), Jim Costa (Calif.), Josh Harder (Calif.) and Gil Cisneros (Calif.) attended the presidential holiday event.
Delgado, Lee and Luria represent districts that President Trump won in the 2016 election.
The Axios report noted that attending a White House event could be a clue as to where lawmakers stand on impeachment.
Cisneros’s chief of staff Nic Jordan pointed Axios to past statements by the lawmaker saying he supported impeachment, and did not deny that his boss was at the party.
A spokesperson for Lee confirmed her attendance to the news outlet, saying, “She’s committed to being a bipartisan problem solver through and through.”
According to Axios, Rep. Justin Amash (I-Mich.), who left the Republican Party this year and has expressed support to impeachment proceedings, also attended the ball.
“Rep. Amash has celebrated Christmas at the White House with his colleagues every year he has served in Congress,” Amash’s chief of staff Poppy Nelson told Axios.
During the Thursday night event, members of the House Judiciary Committee debated articles of impeachment that accuse President Trump of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
The committee voted in favor of the articles of impeachment along party lines on Friday, setting the state for a full chamber vote on whether to charge the president.
