Stefanik defends Roby ‘for bringing her son to work’ after Post op-ed

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) slammed The Washington Post after it published an op-ed that criticized fellow GOP congresswoman Rep. Martha Roby (R-Ala.) for bringing her son to Friday’s House Judiciary Committee on articles of impeachment against President Trump.

“They would NEVER write this about a Democrat woman,” Stefanik tweeted. “Martha is a hardworking Member & fabulous Mom!”

The op-ed was written by Diane McWhorter, author of the Pulitzer-prize winning book “Carry Me Home,” which depicts the events in Birmingham, Ala., during the Civil Rights Movement.

In her op-ed, McWhorter wrote that “by presenting her son for the cameras, Roby sent two messages: (1) a vote to defend this president is a positive civics lesson for our children, and (2) Trump is a role model we should endorse for our growing boys.”

McWhorter said that Trump’s presidency was bringing about the death of the “South’s premium on personal decency.”

McWhorter wrote she believes that although Roby, who’s not running for reelection, “doesn’t really want her son to grow up to be just like [Trump],” the congresswoman still “showcases the boy as her impeachment-vote partner, reminding us that this long civil war is a national inheritance.”

“Trumpism next generation,” she asserts, “will carry on the fight — against the Parkland survivors or the teenager the president tweet-baited for earning the cover of Time.”
