Congressional Black Caucus chair backs Biden
Rep. Steven Horsford (D-Nev.), chair of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), on Monday joined the growing number of Black leaders who have thrown their support behind President Biden as an increasing number of Democrats urge him to end his reelection bid.
In a statement released Monday, Horsford said Biden has been selected by millions of voters across the country, including in Nevada.
“The voters in Nevada care about a thriving and equitable economy, taking on big corporations to lower costs and protecting the hard fought freedoms, rights and opportunities we’ve earned,” Horsford said. “They’re focused on moving forward and reject the divisive politics of those who would like to take us back.”
“They know President Biden and Vice President Harris are fighting for them,” Horsford continued. “Like me, they don’t want to see Donald Trump back in the White House and are ready to work and VOTE to ensure that doesn’t happen. We’re not going back, we’re moving forward.”
Five sitting House Democrats have publicly called for Biden to drop his campaign following last month’s debate against former President Trump, and more have privately suggested he should step aside.
Meanwhile, Black leaders from former President Obama to former CBC Chair Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio) have spent the last few days reaffirming their support for the Biden-Harris reelection campaign, a major plus for Biden as both he and Trump hope to build support among Black voters.
On Monday, the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus also indicated their support for Biden.
“Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have demonstrated their values. They have fought for and won policies that protect real, working class people from exploitative corporate interests in the pharmaceutical industry, overwhelming student debt, and the threats our changing climate brings,” the caucus said.
The caucus added that the only person trustworthy enough to “respect the democratic process” is Biden.
“The choice is between two visions. A second Trump presidency would set us back a generation. We have full faith that a second Biden presidency would keep us moving forward.”
