House Homeland Security Committee chair to visit site of attempted Trump assassination

House Homeland Security Committee Chair Mark Green (R-Tenn.) is set to visit the site of the recent assassination attempt against former President Trump, according to a Saturday media advisory from the committee.

“This Committee continues to seek answers from [Department of Homeland Security] and Secret Service for the security lapses resulting in the near-assassination of former President Trump and the tragic murder of Corey Comperatore,” Green said in the advisory, referring to a man who lost his life in the shooting. “We will visit the site on Monday morning to better understand how this near-assassination took place.”

According to the advisory, Green will go to the site in Butler, Pa., alongside 10 other members from his committee.

Trump was hit in the ear by a bullet during the shooting and was seen sporting a bandage on that ear during the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee this past week.

The Secret Service has faced scrutiny in the wake of the shooting, with some questioning as to how the gunman had access to a roof that had a clear line of sight to Trump.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) called for new leadership at the Secret Service Wednesday.

“Last week’s near-assassination of former President Trump was a grave attack on American democracy,” McConnell said in a post on social platform X. “The nation deserves answers and accountability. New leadership at the Secret Service would be an important step in that direction.”

In remarks from the Oval Office the day after the shooting, President Biden said that “political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated.”

“It’s time to cool it down,” Biden said in his remarks. “This places an added burden on all of us that no matter how strong our convictions, we must never descend into violence.”
