Texas Democrat calls for officials to boycott Trump visit to border wall

A Texas Democrat is urging public officials to stay away from President Trump’s planned trip to the border with Mexico in the wake of rioting at the U.S. Capitol by the president’s supporters last week.

“Do not be fooled: President Trump does not care about the people of South Texas, this country, or the rule of law. This individual fomented an attack on the United States Capitol and American democracy,” Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-Texas) said on Monday. “As usual, even after being denounced by respectable members of his Cabinet and his own party, he continues to refuse any responsibility for his actions.”

Gonzalez asked elected officials “not to honor him with their presence as an act of American solidarity.”

Trump is scheduled to travel to fly to Alamo, Texas, on Tuesday to signify the completion of 400 miles of the border wall in the area. The Associated Press reported Trump is anxious to highlight beefed-up border security as his time in the White House comes to a close.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, both Republicans, are not expected to accompany Trump during his visit. Both will instead be in Austin for the first day of the state’s biennial legislative session, the Texas Tribune noted

Trump has made few public statements since being banned from social media platforms following his comments in response to the attack on the Capitol last Wednesday. Before the mob of his supporters breached the complex, Trump spoke at a rally near the White House and urged the crowd to march toward the building as a joint session of Congress assembled to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.

On Monday, House Democrats introduced an article of impeachment against Trump, saying he incited insurrection against the government and warning he is a threat to public safety.

“This is a time for good ol’ South Texas American pride to beam into our communities and to not allow ourselves to be used like an old rag by a modern day traitor,” Gonzalez said. “I also urge the media to be conscious of his goal, which is nothing more than an effort to distract and deceive the American people on the taxpayers’ dime. Regardless of party affiliation, this is a time for South Texans to display true American patriotism and honor our democracy.”
