Ayanna Pressley’s husband tests positive for COVID-19

Rep. Ayanna Pressley’s (D-Mass.) husband, Conan Harris, has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and is exhibiting mild symptoms, her office said on Wednesday.

The congresswoman has tested negative but remains in isolation as a precautionary measure.

“As my colleagues and I sought shelter from the white supremacist mob that violently attacked our seat of government, we were greeted by a different threat—one posed by my callous Republican colleagues who, in this crowded and confined space, repeatedly refused to wear masks when offered,” she said in a statement Wednesday afternoon.

“Their arrogant disregard for the lives of others is infuriating, but not surprising, and we are seeing the consequences of it daily, as several of my colleagues—and now my husband—test positive for COVID-19,” Pressley added.

Pressley’s office said Harris arrived in D.C. last week to attend his wife’s swearing-in ceremony and “was with her in the Capitol complex throughout the January 6 attack.”

The mob of Trump supporters that stormed the Capitol clashed with Capitol Police in a riot that left at least five people dead.

In a Twitter post Tuesday, Pressley said she was guided to a “safe room” with other lawmakers during the siege but left after she saw that others in room “included treasonous, white supremacist, anti masker Members of Congress who incited the mob in the first place.”

Pressley added that she was “furious” that more of her “colleagues by the day are testing positive.”

Several lawmakers have tested positive for COVID-19 since the Jan. 6 attack when members of Congress were confined to a secure location, where video showed some Republicans refusing to wear masks.

“Like many families in Massachusetts and all across the country who have been impacted by this pandemic, I am deeply outraged by the criminal negligence of the current administration in responding to this crisis, along with their accomplices in Congress who continue to downplay the severity of a virus that has claimed the lives of over 380,000 Americans,” she said in Wednesday’s statement.

Pressley went on to say that as Congress moves forward with impeaching Trump for a second time, lawmakers must do more to “ensure adequate protocols are in place to protect the health and safety of Members of Congress, congressional staff, Capitol support and service workers, and journalists.”

“That includes a strict mask mandate for everyone in the building, serious fines and immediate removal from the House floor and House buildings for those who refuse to comply, and access to free, universal COVID-19 testing,” Pressley said.

Pressley said she and her husband “will remain in isolation in the coming days,” adding that she will still carry out her congressional duties.

The House on Wednesday is expected to pass an article of impeachment charging President Trump with “willfully inciting violence against the Government of the United States” in last week’s riot.

Several House Republicans have said they plan to vote for impeachment.
