READ: McCarthy’s resolution censuring Maxine Waters
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is seeking to censure Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) for saying that “we’ve got to get more confrontational” about police brutality against Black Americans.
McCarthy tweeted the resolution on Tuesday afternoon. It refers to Waters over the weekend responding to the trial of Derek Chauvin, a former police officer who is accused of killing George Floyd.
In a video that was shared widely on social media, Waters said she was looking for a “guilty verdict” and “if we don’t, we cannot go away … we’ve got to get more confrontational.”
McCarthy’s resolution also refers to the judge in Chauvin’s trial, who criticized Waters for discussing her preferred verdict as an elected official.
A vote on the censure resolution is expected Tuesday afternoon.
A verdict in Chauvin’s trial is also expected to be read later in the afternoon.
