Sanders on Cheney drama: GOP is an ‘anti-democratic cult’

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) called the GOP an ”anti-democratic cult” in a Thursday tweet commenting on Rep. Liz Cheney’s (R-Wyo.) almost certain ouster from House Republican leadership next week.

Sanders said Cheney was being ousted for the crime of “acknowledging the reality” that former President Trump lost the 2020 election to President Biden. 

“The Republican Party is no longer a ‘conservative’ party. It is an anti-democratic cult pushing the Big Lie and conspiracy theories,” wrote Sanders, who ran for president himself in 2020 but was defeated by Biden in the Democratic primary.

Cheney is going through a public rift with her party after being one of the few Republicans to show criticism toward Trump. Cheney has repeatedly gone after the former president over his various remarks arguing the election was stolen from him.

Trump lost the election to Biden and there has been no evidence of widespread fraud, despite his repeated protests.

House Republicans, however, have largely become annoyed with Cheney’s criticisms of the former president, who remains the driving force behind the party.

Trump released a statement Wednesday calling Cheney a “warmongering fool.”

Cheney is one of the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump after a mob of his supporters stormed the building on Jan. 6 in an attempt to stop the certification of the Electoral College results.
