Cheney to any Trump-backed challenger: ‘Bring it on’

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) indicated in an interview with NBC News that she is ready for a primary against any Republican who supports former President Trump.

“Bring it on,” Cheney said in a preview clip of the interview with NBC’s “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie that is set to air on Thursday morning, Today reported.

Cheney was ousted from her leadership position in the House on Wednesday as Republicans saw her as dividing the party due to her comments speaking out against Trump and his election fraud conspiracy theories.

Cheney was asked if her remarks against Trump were “a battle for the soul of the Republican Party.”

“This is the opening salvo in that battle, and it’s a battle we have to win because it’s not just about the Republican Party; it’s about the country,” Cheney responded.

Cheney indicated after the vote that she would not stop speaking out against Trump and said she would fight his run for the presidency if he ran again in 2024.

Cheney did have some supporters in the House, with Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) saying Cheney was “canceled today for speaking her mind and disagreeing with the narrative that President Trump has put forth.”

However, many Republicans were against Cheney and are supporting Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) to take her place now that she has been voted out.

I intend to be the leader — one of the leaders — in a fight to help to restore our party, in a fight to bring our party back to substance and principle and in a fight to make clear that we won’t participate in the really dangerous effort that’s underway,” Cheney said during the NBC interview.
