Cheney says she ‘regrets’ voting for Trump

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) says she regrets voting for former President Trump during the 2020 election, days after being removed from House GOP leadership over her criticism of Trump’s false election claims.

“I was never going to support Joe Biden and I do regret the vote,” Cheney told ABC News’s Jonathan Karl in an interview set to air Sunday on “This Week.”

“It was a vote based on policy, based on substance and in terms of the kinds of policies he put forward that were good for the country. But I think it’s fair to say that I regret the vote,” Cheney said.

Cheney and Trump have traded intense blows this year, with the Wyoming Republican vocally refuting the former president’s claims that the 2020 election was stolen, in turn sparking fierce backlash from Trump.

Trump, who has remained vocal months after leaving office, advocated for Cheney to be removed from her leadership position in the House — which GOP lawmakers voted to do Wednesday.

Cheney has said she will do “everything” in her power to keep Trump from winning the presidency should he decide to run again in 2024.

“I will do everything I can to ensure that the former president never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office,” she said this week. “We have seen the danger that he continues to provoke with his language. We have seen his lack of commitment and dedication to the Constitution. And I think it’s very important that we make sure whomever we elect is somebody that will be faithful to the Constitution.”

Trump responded by calling Cheney a “loser.”

“I don’t care about her. She’s a loser,” Trump said in a radio interview. “And Wyoming, her state, was a great state for me. One of my highest, maybe my highest.”
