Liz Cheney spent $58K on security in months after Trump impeachment vote

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) has spent more than $58,000 on security in the months following her vote to impeach former President Trump for inciting the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, according to a Casper Star-Tribune review of Federal Election Commission data.

The newspaper reported that Wyoming’s at-large representative paid $58,500 for security from late January to early March.

Of that money, Cheney paid $22,500 to security firm Command Executive Services roughly two weeks after her impeachment vote. The remaining money was spent on three former Secret Service agents.

The Star-Tribune pointed out that Cheney has spent less than $2,000 on security services over her past three House campaigns, not exceeding $1,012 in a single campaign. She also never before spent money on security during the first quarter of non-election years.

The newspaper noted, however, that her expenses could decrease during the second quarter since she was assigned a security detail by Capitol Police, something normally reserved for members of congressional leadership.

Cheney’s spokesperson Jeremy Adler told The Hill, “we don’t comment on security.”

Cheney was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump over the riot, and has since been unafraid to criticize Trump.

Her anti-Trump stance led the House Republican Conference to oust her last month as conference chair, and replace her with Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), a Trump loyalist.

But Cheney isn’t the only Republican who voted to impeach Trump that has spent more on personal security after their votes.

Punchbowl News reported in April that Reps. John Katko (N.Y.) and Anthony Gonzalez (Ohio) upped their spending since the vote.

Sen. Pat Toomey (Pa.), one of seven Republican senators who voted to convict Trump, spent nearly $70,000 among multiple security companies, the news outlet reported. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) spent more than $43,000 on security.
