Pelosi’s office rips ‘disgusting’ GOP attacks on Capitol Police: ‘Enough is enough’
Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) office on Thursday condemned the “disgusting” attacks by some Republicans on Capitol Police, saying House GOP leaders need to intervene.
“Enough is enough. These attacks are disgusting, wrong and a wholly unacceptable way to treat the men and women who went through hell to protect our democracy from armed insurrectionists,” Robyn Patterson, a spokesperson for Pelosi, said in a statement before singling out House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).
“It’s long overdue for Minority Leader McCarthy to get off of his hands and stand up to the members of his conference and party who have been terrorizing the brave officers that saved the lives of countless workers, staff, journalists and Members on January 6th. It is no less than these heroes deserve,” Patterson added.
The statement came in response to former President Trump lashing out at the unnamed Capitol Police officer who shot and killed rioter Ashli Babbitt during the Jan. 6 attack.
Trump said in a statement Wednesday that he spoke with family members of Babbitt, an Air Force veteran “who was murdered at the hands of someone who should never have pulled the trigger of his gun. We know who he is.”
He went on to say that “the Radical Left haters cannot be allowed to get away with this.”
Patterson said Trump’s remarks were “only the latest in a long line of vile Republican attacks on the officers who risked their lives to protect the U.S. Capitol on January 6th.”
The Justice Department in April said the officer who shot Babbitt would not be charged in her death.
Some Republican lawmakers have downplayed the events of Jan. 6, portraying some of the rioters as victims. Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), one of Trump’s staunchest supporters, has suggested that Babbitt was “executed” by the unnamed officer.
More than 570 people have been arrested in nearly all 50 states in connection with the riots that saw Trump supporters invade the Capitol, delaying the certification of the 2020 election. More than 170 individuals have been charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement.
Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick was one of five people who died as a result of the riots. Four police officers — one Capitol Police officer and three D.C. Metropolitan Police Department officers — have died by suicide since the riots.
