Loretta Lynch talks transgender rights with ‘Vice’

An upcoming episode of HBO’s “Vice” focused on transgender rights will include an interview with former Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

“As the debate continues over which bathroom transgender people should use, a more complex question is emerging about how early the medical transition begins for trans kids,” reads a preview of the Friday episode about transgender youth in America.

“Families and doctors are rewriting the rules as they decide when and how to start medical intervention before transgender youth hit puberty.”

{mosads}Lynch, described by “Vice” “as a leading advocate for the trans community,” discusses how transgender rights should be treated as a civil rights issue.

“Because this issue of how we treat transgender people in our community, in particular how we treat transgender students in our schools, relates to how our government is going to interact with people whom we perceive to be different,” said Lynch in a preview clip.

“We’ve made such great progress in so many areas of civil rights accepting people for who are they are,” she continued.

“And when you see that attempt to roll back that change through the use of the law, that’s exactly when the Department of Justice needs to step in,” she added.

“Vice” is touting the episode as extremely relevant given “Trump’s recent reversal of the transgender bathroom directive.”

The Obama administration’s guidance that public schools allow students to use facilities that correspond with their gender identity was rolled back by the Trump administration on Feb. 22.

“Trans Youth” airs on HBO’s “Vice” this Friday at 11 p.m.
