Radio station joins ‘A Day Without a Woman’ strike by only playing songs by men
WUHT-FM, a Birmingham-based R&B station owned by Cumulus, said the decision to go with an all-male format for a day wasn’t a difficult one to make. The station also took female hosts off the air.
“This was an easy decision for us,” Operations Manager Ken Johnson said in a statement. “Women are our core listeners, and these women contribute a great deal to our sound. Honoring women by highlighting to the community how important they are is a no-brainer.”
{mosads}”Plus, hearing more Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass and Luther Vandross is not a bad thing,” Johnson added.
#DayWithoutaWoman has been trending on Twitter for most of Wednesday and is an extension of the Women’s March on Washington, held the day after President Trump’s inauguration, that saw millions of protesters turn out across the country.
Organizers urged women to avoid both paid and unpaid work, or if that wasn’t possible, to wear red at work.
“A Day Without a Woman” comes almost one month after the “A Day Without an Immigrant” protest in February.
