NBC News signs former White House press secretary Josh Earnest

Former White House press secretary Josh Earnest has been named an NBC News and MSNBC political analyst.

The announcement was made Monday morning on NBC’s “Today” show.

“Josh recently completed a ten-year run with President Obama, most recently serving as White House Press Secretary from 2014-2017,” reads a memo from NBC News President Noah Oppenheim and MSNBC President Phil Griffin.

With his wealth of experience and insight, Josh will be a great addition to our roster of contributors and will be an asset for our two networks as we continue to cover the White House, Congress and politics beyond the Beltway.”

Earnest follows in a long line of former press secretaries going from the White House to network and cable news outlets.

Jay Carney and Robert Gibbs, who also worked for Obama, were hired after leaving the White House by CNN and MSNBC, respectively.

Dana Perino, who worked for President George W. Bush, was signed by Fox News and serves as co-host of “The Five.”

Ari Fleischer, who also served under Bush from 2001 to 2003, would join CNN as a contributor years later, from 2011 to 2013.

Tony Snow, who served under Bush in 2006 and was a Fox News host prior to coming on at the White House, was signed by CNN following his stint as press secretary in 2007. He died after a bout with colon cancer in 2008 at age 53.

Earnest, 42, will work out of NBC’s Washington bureau.
