NY Times jumps the gun on Pulitzer Prize announcement

The New York Times on Monday published an announcement about its Pulitzer Prize winners hours before they were officially revealed.

“How does it feel to get a Pulitzer Prize? Ask The Times’s recently announced 2017 winners yourself — they’ll be taking questions live today at 4:30 p.m. E.T.,” said the newspaper said on page 2 of its Monday print edition.

Times spokeswoman Eileen Murphy said in the advance announcement was “a mistake, combined with a little bit of hopeful thinking.” 

The Times on Monday won three Pulitzer Prizes for international reporting, breaking news photography and feature writing.

The 165-year-old paper has won 122 Pulitzers, the most of any publication.

The New York Daily News and ProPublica won a Pulitzer Prize for their joint investigation into abuses in the New York City Police Department’s enforcement of a nuisance abatement law. The award is the 11th for the Daily News and the fourth Pulitzer for ProPublica.

The Washington Post’s David Fahrenthold won the Pulitzer Prize for national campaign reporting on Donald Trump’s claims as a candidate about his charitable giving.

Fahrenthold reported in one story that Trump spent $20,000 that was allocated to his charity on a portrait of himself.

The Oakland, Calif.-based East Bay Times won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news reporting for its extensive coverage of a warehouse fire that killed 36 people in December.
