HBO cancels Jon Stewart’s animated digital series

Jon Stewart’s animated HBO series has been canceled, with the pay channel citing insurmountable “technical issues.”

Stewart, a former host of “The Daily Show,” signed with HBO in November of 2015 after a highly successful 16-year run on Comedy Central.

“HBO and Jon Stewart have decided not to proceed with a short form digital animated project,” HBO said in a statement. “We all thought the project had great potential, but there were technical issues in terms of production and distribution that proved too difficult given the quick turnaround and topical nature of the material.

{mosads}”We’re excited to report that we have some future projects together, which you will be hearing about in the near future.”

The news was first reported by The New York Times.

Stewart, 55, had hoped to produce “timely” short-form animated video content around recent news events, but reports say Stewart couldn’t get the kind of quality content he sought.

“Appearing on television 22 minutes a night clearly broke me. I’m pretty sure I can produce a few minutes of content every now and again,” Stewart said when the deal was announced.

Stewart has mostly stayed out of the public eye outside of a few guest appearances on CBS’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
