Report: Fox News will not hire Spicer

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer will not be offered a contract by Fox News, according to a Thursday report from Axios.

The lack of interest in the 45-year-old one-time communications director breaks a recent trend of White House press secretaries being hired by one of the cable news networks. 

Robert Gibbs, Jay Carney and Josh Earnest, the three press secretaries who served under former President Obama, were all hired by news networks after leaving the White House. Gibbs and Earnest went to MSNBC, while Carney signed with CNN. 

Dana Perino, who worked for former President George W. Bush, was signed by Fox News and serves as co-host of “The Five.”

Ari Fleischer, who served as press secretary under Bush from 2001 to 2003, joined CNN as a contributor years later, from 2011 to 2013. He signed with Fox News this summer. 

Tony Snow, who served under Bush in 2006 and was a Fox News host prior to coming on at the White House, was signed by CNN following his stint as press secretary in 2007. He died after a bout with colon cancer in 2008 at age 53.

It was announced earlier Thursday that Spicer will be headed to late-night TV for his first televised interview since leaving the White House next week, appearing as a guest on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on ABC. 

Spicer became an instant household name after his combative style was portrayed by actress Melissa McCarthy in several viral “Saturday Night Live” skits. 

The former communications director for the Republican National Committee resigned as press secretary in July.
