S.E. Cupp scolds Michelle Obama for ‘condescending gender imperialism’

Conservative commentator S.E. Cupp scolded former first lady Michelle Obama Thursday night, calling her comments that women betrayed themselves by not voting for Hillary Clinton, “condescending gender imperialism” and “disgusting.”

The commentary comes after Obama said at a conference in Boston on Wednesday that “any woman who voted against Hillary Clinton voted against their own voice.”

“That we look at those two candidates, as women, and many of us said, ‘He’s better for me. His voice is more true to me.’ To me that just says, you don’t like your voice. You like the thing you’re told to like,” Obama said.

Cupp slammed Obama over the statements during her new HLN program “Unfiltered.”

“With all due respect to Mrs. Obama, that’s disgusting,” Cupp said. “This is condescending gender imperialism that decrees that just because I’m a woman, I’m obligated to vote for your corrupt, dishonest, morally-bereft, out of touch, and totally unaccountable candidate, who also just happens to be a woman.”
“I didn’t vote for Trump, but how dare you accuse women who did of liking the thing they’re told to like,” Cupp concluded. “There were countless good reasons not to vote for Hillary Clinton. You know what, plenty of Democrats agreed.”

Cupp also compared Obama’s remarks to those of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, who said during the 2016 election that there was a “special place in hell” for women who didn’t vote for Clinton.

“From Madeleine Albright to Gloria Steinem and Hillary herself, we hear the same argument over and over again that Republican women aren’t the ‘right’ kind of woman, that we’re traitors to our gender and somehow don’t count as women,” Cupp said.

“Of course, it doesn’t occur to them that women don’t vote with their uteruses alone. From taxes to national security, we’re concerned with a whole host of issues, but if you listen to these broads, we’re just unable to find our ‘real voices,’ you know, the one that sounds more like theirs.”

Cupp’s primetime program, which tackles various topics mostly via panel discussions, debuted on HLN last month.
