Kathy Griffin tells Colin Kaepernick she’s ‘proud’ of his activism

Comedian Kathy Griffin, who found herself the subject of a major political backlash earlier this year, thanked NFL free agent Colin Kaepernick for his activism.

“I’m proud of you [Colin Kaepernick.] Your activism has come at a price but you haven’t backed down…not even once. Thank you for leading the way,” Griffin tweeted on Sunday.

Her comment came as protests have swept the NFL following President Trump’s comments that football players who kneel during the national anthem should be fired.

Kaepernick was among the first in the league to embrace the form of protest when in 2016 he began sitting and then kneeling during the anthem in response to racial injustice in the U.S.

Griffin’s tweet also comes not long after she found herself embroiled in her own controversy, when a photo of her holding a fake severed head resembling President Trump leaked online.

Following widespread criticism, Griffin apologized for the photo.

“I asked your forgiveness. Taking down the image, gonna ask the photographer to take down the image, and I beg for your forgiveness. I went too far. I made a mistake and I was wrong,” the comedian and former reality TV star said in a video apology posted on Twitter.

In July, Griffin was reportedly interviewed by the Secret Service over the photo.
