NYT podcast downloaded over 100M times since February launch

The New York Times’s daily audio news report has been downloaded more than 100 million times in the first nine months since its launch, the newspaper announced Tuesday.

“The Daily,” which kicked off Feb. 1, shortly after President Trump took office, has seen weekday daily downloads grow by 34 percent since June, according to the newspaper.

The podcast, which is hosted by veteran political reporter Michael Barbaro and focuses on the big political and news topics of the day, saw 3.8 million unique visitors in August.

“The Daily” is especially resonating with younger audiences, according to the Times. Two-thirds of listeners are 40 and under, and more than a third are under the age of 30.

By comparison, the average age of a cable news viewer is 63 years old.

“‘The Daily’ draws on the unrivaled quality and expertise of The Times’s global newsroom of more than 1,350 journalists,” the paper said in its announcement.

“Not only does it offer listeners deeply reported analysis of the day’s most pressing stories, the show allows its audience to get to know Times reporters and understand exactly what’s required for them to get the full story. More than 120 Times journalists have now joined host Michael Barbaro to chat on the topic of the day,” the release adds.

Barbaro joined the Times in 2005 and most recently served as a national politics reporter covering the 2016 presidential campaign before jumping to the publication’s audio team.
