McConnell-linked group mocks Breitbart for falling traffic

A group linked to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) echoed President Trump’s tweeting style Friday to slam the Stephen Bannon-led site Breitbart News for falling traffic numbers.

“Failing @BreitbartNews: traffic plummets 20% this year, desperate for attention! SAD!” the group wrote on Twitter to its 472 followers from an account called Senate Ldshp Fund.

The Senate Leadership Fund is an independent super PAC allied with McConnell.

McConnell foes quickly responded to the tweet, including Bannon political adviser Andrew Surabian and Doug Stafford, Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) chief adviser.

“I mean, come on – are you really allowed to make fun of something’s reach from a social account with 400 followers??” asked Stafford.

“Rough week for SLF: No Senate candidates support Mitch 56% of GOP voters want Mitch gone Flake forced out Tarkanian leads Heller SAD!,” tweeted Surabian.

The Hill has reached out to Breitbart News for comment.
Bannon parted ways with the White House on Aug. 18 and immediately returned to Breitbart to serve as its executive chairman.

The former White House chief strategist has repeatedly declared that he is going to war with the GOP establishment on Capitol Hill following his departure from the Trump administration.{mosads}

Bannon told CBS’s “60 Minutes” last month that parts of the establishment “will be held accountable.”

“They’re not going to help you unless they’re put on notice. They’re going to be held accountable if they do not support the president of the United States,” Bannon told host Charlie Rose. “Right now there’s no accountability. They have totally — they do not support the president’s program. It’s an open secret on Capitol Hill. Everybody in this city knows it.”

“And so, therefore, now that you’re out of the White House, you’re going to war with them?” Rose asked.

“Absolutely,” Bannon replied.

Breitbart often criticizes McConnell while highlighting negative news about him.

“Exclusive — Mitch McConnell’s Full Meltdown: Danny Tarkanian Slams Majority Leader, Dean Heller for Baseless Smears Against Steve Bannon,” reads one Wednesday headline.
The latest war of words comes as a former aide to McConnell defended his use of the term “white supremacist” to describe Bannon.

“If you look at his associations, the people who are ecstatic about his efforts, the long history of conduct that he has been a part of, I will let others come to their conclusions,” Josh Holmes, a former chief of staff to McConnell, told The Washington Post.

“But this is not a guy that just burst on the scene. Let’s not act like everybody doesn’t know exactly who Steve Bannon is.”

Holmes last week applied the phrase to Bannon in an interview with The Hill.

“When you’re facing voters, I’d take one of the most successful majority leaders in history over a white supremacist any day,” Holmes said on Oct. 22.
