Colbert mocks Trump Jr. for urging Virginians to vote on wrong day

Stephen Colbert on Tuesday mocked Donald Trump Jr. for mistakenly telling Virginians to vote on the wrong day.

“One person weighing in on this race is spare Trump and man-who-reads-Maxim-on-his-Kindle, Donald Trump Jr.,” Colbert said on his “The Late Show.”

“Donald Jr. woke up this morning to urge people to get the vote out — but maybe he should have waited till he’d had his morning cup of hair gel.”

Trump Jr. on Tuesday urged Virginians to get out and vote for Republican candidate Ed Gillespie for governor. But he mistakenly told voters — twice — the election was Wednesday instead of Tuesday.

“Let’s take @EdWGillespie across the finish line tomorrow! Virginia: get out and vote for Ed & entire @GOP ticket #VAGov #VA,” Trump Jr. tweeted Tuesday morning.

“Virginia, the future of the Commonwealth is at stake tomorrow. Find your polling place at vote.gop to vote Ed for #VAGov,” Trump Jr. tweeted a few hours later.

Replies quickly flooded in, correcting Trump Jr. and pointing out that the election is on Tuesday.

Colbert said Tuesday night that Trump Jr.’s tweets were “fine.”

“Except the election was today — not tomorrow. #whoopsiedaisy, #turnsoutEricisthesmartone,” Colbert said.

Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam (D) won the Virginia governor’s race in a blowout Tuesday.

He defeated Gillespie by nearly 9 percentage points in the race, giving Democrats a badly needed jolt of momentum ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.
