Laura Ingraham: Moore a ‘convenient GOP scapegoat’

Fox News’s Laura Ingraham said Republican lawmakers are using GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore as a a way to deflect from their own shortcomings and called on the party to do some self-reflection.

During a segment on Fox News on Wednesday, Ingraham referred to Moore as the “convenient GOP scapegoat.”

“When it comes to Roy Moore’s Alabama Senate bid, it seems like everyone is running for the exits. And perhaps they should,” she said.

“Look, the accusations have piled up, and I understand, no one running for office wants to be asked uncomfortable questions.”

Ingraham said these types of questions include whether lawmakers support Moore in the wake of multiple sexual misconduct allegations and whether they think Moore should be seated.

“‘He’s gonna hurt the party,’ leaders say, ‘so let’s cut our losses now and put Jeff Sessions back in his old seat. It’s going to be a midterm election disaster for the GOP,'” she said.

“I kind of think the GOP is just trying to use the Moore allegations — yeah, use them, to deflect — deflect attention and criticism from their own failures.”

Ingraham said Moore’s future is going to depend on the voters in Alabama and the future of the GOP will depend on its own legislative record. She cited a poll which showed just 29 percent of all Americans have a positive view of the GOP.

“I mean, Donald Trump’s looking really good compared to those numbers,” she said.

“And last time I checked, let’s face it, it wasn’t Moore who dropped the ball on ObamaCare repeal and he didn’t take long periods of time off out of session while he had work to do.”

Ingraham added Moore also didn’t fail to support “enforcement of immigration laws.”

“And we know this, Moore didn’t set up a slush fund for congressional miscreants who are involved with sexual behavior; now that’s immoral,” she said.

Ingraham said Moore will hurt the GOP image in 2018.

“He could, if he’s elected, and especially among some female voters, that’ll hurt,” she said.

“But before the GOP makes him the scapegoat for all that ails the party, well, I think the GOP itself needs to do some self-reflection.”

She questioned what the GOP was going to do to try to build back its reputation.

Her comments come as Moore faces growing calls from top Republicans to step aside in the Alabama Senate race after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct.

Moore has denied the allegations and indicated he plans to remain in the race.
