Trevor Noah mocks Trump’s lawyer: ‘If he can’t get you off, he’ll frame himself for the crime’

Late-night host Trevor Noah on Monday mocked President Trump’s lawyer, who said the president’s tweet last week about firing former national security adviser Michael Flynn was his “mistake.”

During “The Daily Show,” Noah said that, luckily for the president, he “pays his lawyer a lot.”

“That’s a lawyer. If he can’t get you off, he’ll frame himself for the crime. That’s what I’m paying for!” Noah joked.

“That’s like if Johnnie Cochran had tried the glove on himself, and he’d be like, ‘It fits perfectly — because it’s my murdering glove!’ ”

His comments come after Trump sent out a tweet Saturday in which he appeared to reveal he knew Flynn had lied to the FBI when he was fired by the Trump administration.

“I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI. He has pled guilty to those lies,” Trump tweeted. “It is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide!” 

Trump in February said he fired Flynn because he lied to the vice president, but he did not mention anything related to what the former national security adviser told the FBI.

The weekend tweet spurred controversy as legal experts suggested if Trump knew Flynn had lied to the FBI and then asked former FBI Director James Comey to drop the investigation into Flynn, it could amount to obstruction of justice.

Trump’s personal lawyer, John Dowd, then said the tweet was his “mistake.” He said he had drafted the tweet, according to Axios.

“I’m out of the tweeting business. I did not mean to break news,” Dowd told Axios.

Dowd also said a president can’t obstruct justice “because he is the chief law enforcement officer under [the Constitution’s Article II] and has every right to express his view of any case.”
