S.E. Cupp knocks cable news hosts for ‘activist’ gun coverage

HLN host S.E. Cupp hit cable news anchors on Thursday, hitting their reporting of Wednesday’s mass shooting at a Florida high school as “activist” coverage.

“If you turned on cable news last night and this morning, it’s safe to say you didn’t get the news,” the host said on her show, “S.E. Cupp Unfilltered.” “That’s because, when it comes to guns, news anchors take off their journalist hats and put on their activist hats.”

Cupp, a vocal Second Amendment supporter, said she is upfront on her show about making sure there is “no false pretense you’re getting pure objectivity.” She went on to hit hosts she claims veered into advocacy while reporting on the shooting.

“They do it without shame or disclaimers because they believe righteousness is the same thing as being right,” Cupp said. “They put a Democratic lawmaker on or a former Republican lawmaker who shares their point of view to complain that Republicans will never do anything about guns.”

The comments from Cupp, a former CNN anchor, appeared to be a veiled attack on CNN “New Day” host Chris Cuomo, who took sides on Thursday when he discussed gun control with a former GOP congressman and mocked Republican lawmakers for not appearing on the network.

MSNBC anchor Nicole Wallace also said on her program Thursday the GOP needs to “wake up and realize it has blood on its hands” over the gun control issue.

“If they spend an hour blaming Republicans for the deaths of school children and calling their constituents too stupid to understand their own rights, don’t be surprised when they don’t want to come on,” Cupp said.

Cuomo suggested Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), who have warned against politicizing the shooting, were afraid to come on the program.

“I want to change this as much as anybody,” Cupp said, referring to the mass shootings that have occurred. “But we’ll never get change as long as these people are leading the discussion.”
