‘Art of the Deal’ co-author on Trump: ‘We are in a true emergency’

The co-author of President Trump’s bestselling 1987 book, “The Art of the Deal,” said Sunday that the president is having a meltdown and that the U.S. is at “enormous risk that goes far beyond what most journalists are comfortable saying.”

“We are in a true emergency,” Tony Schwartz said on CNN’s “Reliable Sources.” “And the accelerated rate at which his breakdown or decompensation is occurring is cause for us, and certainly for me, to come on to TV more often, to tweet more often.”

Schwartz said the time he’s spent with Trump and his experience in the field of psychology make him qualified to make those observations about the president.

When asked by host Brian Stelter if he was trying to sound the alarm, Schwartz said he was trying to act like Paul Revere.

Schwartz’s comments come a few days after Trump criticized  U.S. allies during a NATO summit in Brussels.

Trump later railed against British Prime Minister Theresa May’s approach to Brexit, saying her plan would likely “kill” the potential for a trade deal with the U.S.

In addition to raising alarms, Schwartz acknowledged that he incorrectly predicted Trump would resign before the end of his first year in office.

“You’re right, I completely missed it,” Schwartz said. “I think I underestimated the enormous attachment he would have to being in that office. I think he likes meeting all of these people and he particularly likes dominating these people.”

Schwartz has been deeply critical of Trump throughout his presidency. Earlier this month, he tweeted that Trump was “incapable of reading a book, much less writing one,” after the president bragged about his writing skills.
