ABC adds third hour to ‘Good Morning America’

ABC plans to launch a third hour of “Good Morning America” programming in early September that will air in the early afternoon, Variety is reporting.

The network plans to pair current co-host Michael Strahan with Sara Haines of “The View” for the new block of programming. The two are set to host their first hour starting Sept. 10, according to Variety.

“Good Morning America” currently airs from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Eastern on weekdays. The third hour would reportedly air starting at 1 p.m. on weekdays. The show would be taped instead of airing live.

“Good Morning America” scored a marquee interview earlier this month when President Trump’s former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, spoke with George Stephanopoulos. It marked the first interview Cohen gave to a major network since the FBI raided his apartment, office and hotel room.

Cohen told Stephanopoulos that his first loyalty is to the country and his family, not the president. The comments raised the specter that Trump’s longtime fixer might turn against him in a federal investigation.

Variety noted that while “Good Morning America” is the highest-rated morning program, NBC’s “Today” show usually attracts more viewers in a key demographic coveted by advertisers.
