Meghan McCain: ‘Republicans are not welcome’ in New York City
ABC’s Meghan McCain on Thursday questioned the decision of Sean Spicer to conduct a book signing event in New York City, saying that “Republicans are not welcome here right now,” including herself as someone who would “probably get kicked out of the bookstore” if she tried a similar event.
Spicer would need to be “fine being heckled” to do an event in the deep-blue city, she said on ABC’s “The View.”
“I think there’s a lot of anti-Trump sentiment and people will get heckled here,” the co-host said of New York City. “If you’re fine being heckled, great. It makes me uncomfortable.”
The perspective comes as Spicer kicked off his book tour this week to promote “The Briefing: Politics, The Press, and The President,” which recounts his tumultuous seven-month run as President Trump’s first White House press secretary.
On Wednesday night, Spicer was heckled at a Barnes & Noble bookstore in New York, a city that voted for Hillary Clinton by 79 percent in 2016 to Trump’s 19 percent.

“Who is doing [Spicer’s] media?” McCain asked rhetorically.
“I wouldn’t do a book signing in New York City. I’d probably be kicked out of the bookstore,” she continued.
“Republicans are not welcome here right now,” McCain added. “In a lot of different ways. What did you expect is going to happen?”

Spicer, 46, often sparred with the press during his tenure in the James S. Brady Briefing Room at the White House.
“Saturday Night Live” created a recurring skit starring actress Melissa McCarthy as Spicer, which quickly went viral with McCarthy winning an Emmy Award for the portrayal.
Spicer resigned as White House press secretary on July 21, 2017. Sarah Huckabee Sanders took over the role not long thereafter.
