Brzezinski: The US under Trump has become ‘the butt of a big joke’

MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski said Wednesday that the laughter at President Trump’s United Nations (U.N.) speech is a sign of how far America has fallen under his presidency.

“The world is laughing at the President of the United States,” Brzezinski, a frequent critic of the president, said Wednesday, according to Mediaite. “And Donald Trump’s America has become the butt of a big joke.”

Trump spoke Tuesday at the U.N. General Assembly about the strides America has made under his administration, focusing particularly on the booming U.S. economy during his presidency.

{mosads}”In less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country,” Trump said, adding, “So true.”

Audience members, which included heads of state, laughed after that remark, to which Trump said, “I didn’t expect that reaction, but that’s OK.” He then continued with his scripted speech.

Brzezinski said Wednesday that the response by world leaders was a significant moment for the U.S.

“What you saw there tells you a lot of how the world leaders see Donald Trump,” she said. “And they are openly laughing at him — at his tweets, and his loyalty oaths, at his sexism and his makeshift meetings with dictators, at his lies and his reality show policies — aren’t they?”

During Tuesday’s speech, Trump took aim at globalism and promoted the importance of national sovereignty.

“America will always choose independence and cooperation over global governance, control and domination,” he said, adding that Americans “reject the ideology of globalism and accept the ideology of patriotism.”

“I honor the right of every nation in this room to pursue its own customs, beliefs and traditions. The United States will not tell you how to live, work or worship,” Trump said. “We only ask that you honor our sovereignty in return.”
