San Diego Union-Tribune staff evacuated after suspicious package found

Staff of The San Diego Union-Tribune were evacuated Wednesday after suspicious packages were found outside of the building where the newspaper is located.

The newspaper reported the police found a “stack of suspicious looking packages” on a trash can, forcing the staff to evacuate. A hazardous materials team is investigating the area, according to the newspaper.

Kate Morrissey, a reporter at the San Diego paper, said on Twitter that the building where the newspaper is housed also includes an office for Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris (Calif.).{mosads}

“Our office was evacuated today after suspicious packages were found near the building,” Lily Adams, a Harris spokesperson, said in a tweet.

“The packages were not addressed to the Senator or our office. We are grateful to the San Diego Police Department for their work to swiftly investigate this issue,” she added.

A CBS affiliate in Fresno, Calif., was also partially evacuated Wednesday after a “suspicious box” was found outside of its building, the station reported.

The evacuations come after suspected explosive devices were sent Wednesday to the homes of Hillary Clinton and former President Obama, as well as to CNN’s office at the Time Warner Building in New York City.

The Secret Service said it intercepted the packages sent to Clinton’s home in New York and Obama’s home in Washington, D.C., and that it has launched an investigation into the matter.

Authorities have said the packages sent to Clinton, Obama and CNN appear to have similarities.

An explosive device was also found earlier this week near the home of George Soros, the billionaire investor and prominent Democratic donor.
