BBC journalist says Trump was ‘creepy’ during interview
A female journalist with the BBC claims President Trump was “creepy” when she interviewed him in 2012.
“BBC Breakfast” presenter and business reporter Steph McGovern described Friday how Trump, then a business mogul, flirted with her and called her “so beautiful.”
“He said, ‘You’re so beautiful, I’m going to leave the room to make myself look better, because if we do this interview now everyone is just going to be staring at you and not listening to me,’ ” she recalled Trump said to her.
{mosads}McGovern pretended to gag while recounting Trump’s compliments.
“It’s because he thought that would be the best way to disarm me,” McGovern said.
“He thought as a female journalist, he thought that was the best thing to say to me rather than ‘Oh, I watched your piece on mobile phone insurance last week,’” she continued.
She responded by telling him she heard better pickup lines at the Club Bongo.
McGovern said it still makes her “feel sick” thinking about her interaction with him.
Trump has complimented female journalists while in the Oval Office, singling out a reporter during a phone call with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar last year.
“She has a nice smile on her face. So I bet she treats you well,” Trump told Varadkar about journalist Caitriona Perry.
The president has been criticized for his treatment of female reporters in the past.
He famously tangled with outgoing NBC host Megyn Kelly, then of Fox News, during his presidential campaign in 2015.
“She gets out and starts asking me all sorts of ridiculous questions,” Trump said of his interactions with Kelly. “You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever.”
Late-night host Seth Meyers called Trump a “sexist d—” earlier this month after the president insulted ABC’s Cecilia Vega and interrupted CNN’s Kaitlan Collins during a press conference.
Journalist April Ryan says that Trump treats women and minority reporters differently than he treats white men in the White House press corps.
