Jon Stewart: Trump tricks media into covering him by appealing to their ‘narcissism’

Jon Stewart rebuked the mainstream media’s coverage of President Trump in an interview on Tuesday, saying that reporters often take comments from the president “personally.”

Speaking alongside comedian Dave Chappelle with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, the former “Daily Show” host said that Trump’s election had “wounded” journalists in the U.S.

{mosads}”I think that journalists have taken it personally,” Stewart, a frequent critic of the president, said. “They are personally wounded and offended by this man. He baits them.”

He also said that the president provokes reporters into covering his comments aimed at the press and other targets while his administration’s policies are ignored.

“What he’s done well, I thought, is appeal to their own narcissism,” he added. “They take it personally and now he has changed the conversation to not that his policies are silly or not working or any of those other things, it’s all about the fight.”

“He is able to tune out everything else and just get people focused on the fight. And he’s going to win that fight,” Stewart said.

Earlier this year, Stewart slammed Trump over the administration’s immigration policies, which at the time were causing thousands of migrant families to be separated from children at the border with Mexico.

He is set to direct an original political satire, titled “Irresistible.” The project, announced earlier this month, is the comedian’s second since leaving Comedy Central.
