Bill Maher: ‘Trump is like a racist Paul Revere’

HBO host Bill Maher on Friday tore into President Trump for stoking fear around the Central American migrant caravan traveling toward the U.S., saying the president is like a “racist Paul Revere.”

The “Real Time with Bill Maher” host said Trump’s rhetoric regarding the migrants, who are still hundreds of miles away from the U.S. border, “gets worse” as Tuesday’s midterm elections approach.

{mosads}“Trump is like a racist Paul Revere. ‘The migrants are coming! The migrants are coming,’” Maher said. “He keeps calling it an invasion. Yes, an invasion of strollers.”

“The great invaders of history, Attila the Hun, Ivan the Terrible, Dora the Explorer,” Maher said of the caravan, which includes hundreds of children.

Maher also slammed Fox News, accusing the network of treating the migrant caravan like a “zombie apocalypse.”

“But zombies eat brains, why would they be heading toward America?” he quipped.

The group of Central American migrants are fleeing violence and poverty in their home countries and aim to seek asylum in the United States, according to multiple reports.

Trump, this week, sent 5,200 active-duty personnel to the southern border to assist Border Patrol in responding to the diminishing caravan. He has suggested that he might deploy as many as 15,000 service members.

“Nobody is coming in. We’re not allowing people to come in,” the president said.

Maher lambasted the president for sending the army to “stare down the people with sippy-cups.”

“I don’t want to say the Army is being used as props, but instead of saying ‘move out,’ the commanding officer now says ‘places,’” Maher joked in an apparent reference to film directors.

The president was met with backlash this week after he suggested that the military stationed at the border would shoot at migrants if they throw rocks.

“They want to throw rocks at our military, our military fights back,” he said Thursday. “I told them, consider it a rifle.”

The president on Friday walked back his suggestion that he wanted the military to fire on migrants, saying “I didn’t say shoot, I didn’t say shoot,” stating that the migrants would be arrested and not fired upon by troops.

A group of Central American migrants traveling with the caravan filed a class action lawsuit against Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and other members of the administration on Thursday.

The six Honduran migrants and their children argue that Trump cannot legally stop them from seeking asylum in the United States and allege he is violating the due process clause of the Fifth Amendment, which prohibits the federal government from denying anyone life, liberty or property without due process of law.
