Dem rep: Trump is ‘scared’ of House Democratic oversight
Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Az.) said Thursday that President Trump is “scared” of the oversight authority House Democrats have after winning the majority this midterm election.
“The President clearly is scared that there will be oversight coming from the Democrats in the House,” he told Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room.”
Gallego focused on the resignation of Jeff Sessions, saying that the president asking for the former Attorney General to leave “shows that the President really is scared and he wants to move fast to basically snuff” the investigation into possible collusion between Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and Russia ahead of the 2016 election lead by Robert Mueller.
{mosads}Gallego also said Trump making moves to fire the special counsel would challenge legal principles.
“This all about the Rule of Law and the president should respect that, since he basically just ran a whole campaign about not breaking the law,” he said.
The acting Attorney General, Matthew Whitaker, has criticized the idea of the special counsel in the past, leading many including Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.) and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) to raise red flags about potential interruption of the probe.
Gallego finished the interview by highlighting what he believed the new Democratic majority in the House needs to do.
“We’re here to do our constitutional duties… to be a check and balance against the executive,” he said.
