John Lewis getting CNN documentary
Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) is getting his own documentary from CNN Films.
The yet-to-be-titled documentary about the civil rights icon and veteran lawmaker will chronicle his 2018 midterm election victory and 2019’s congressional battles, according to The Associated Press.
CNN announced Wednesday that the documentary was in the works after director Dawn Porter followed the 79-year-old Lewis behind the scenes for the past several months.
{mosads}“There has never been a more urgent need for the type of moral and compassionate leadership that he embodies,” Porter said in a statement, according to Ebony. “I am so honored to be directing this documentary for CNN Films, in partnership with AGC Studios, and am excited to show the world how John Lewis continues to make what he calls ‘Good Trouble.’”
The documentary also depicts the 17-term congressman navigating the longest partial government shutdown in history, which ended earlier this year. Porter’s team is reportedly filming the documentary through the rest of 2019.
Before running for office, Lewis was known for his civil rights work in the 1950s and ’60s, most notably for his participation in the Selma to Montgomery march and his friendship with Martin Luther King Jr.
CNN has produced several original documentaries on historical figures of late, including former Presidents Nixon and George H.W. Bush and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, among others.
The documentary is scheduled to be released sometime next year.
