Fox’s Hemmer slams Ocasio-Cortez: ‘Does she not owe every Jew on this planet an apology?’
Fox News anchor Bill Hemmer on Tuesday criticized Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks comparing U.S. detention facilities for immigrants to concentration camps, asking whether the New York Democrat “owes every Jew on the planet an apology.”
{mosads}”Has she ever been to Yad Vashem in Jerusalem or Auschwitz-Birkenau in southern Poland or Dachau in Germany?” Hemmer said during a segment on “America’s Newsroom” with Art Del Cueto, who serves on the National Border Patrol Council.
” ‘Never Again’ is the phrase that Jews all over the world use to make sure that the extermination between 1939 and 1945 never happens again, and she’s using concentration camps to describe what’s happening on the southern border,” Hemmer continued. “How in the world is that acceptable? Does she not owe every Jew on this planet an apology?”
“I think it’s disgusting to compare what the men and women do out on the border right now to that, and it is definitely a slap in the face to a lot of these individuals that have family members that actually went through concentration camps,” Del Cueto said. “I’ve said it many times. Some of these people need to crack open a history book before they make some comments.
During an Instagram Live video posted late Monday, Ocasio-Cortez ripped the Trump administration for setting up detention centers to house immigrants crossing the border.
The centers have come under previous criticisms from Democrats and other groups for their conditions. The Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general found “egregious” conditions at some centers, including “unusable” bathrooms and expired food.
“The U.S. is running concentration camps on our southern border, and that is exactly what they are,” the freshman lawmaker said in the video. “If that doesn’t bother you … I want to talk to the people that are concerned enough with humanity to say that ‘never again’ means something.”
Critics have blasted Ocasio-Cortez for making the comparison, with Hemmer and others noting that 6 million Jews were killed in the Holocaust.
“Art, she used the extermination of 6 million people,” the anchor said. “She used the phrase who are concerned enough with humanity to say ‘Never Again’ means something.”
