CNN names Phil Mattingly chief domestic corespondent

CNN has named Phil Mattingly chief domestic correspondent following the shuttering of the channel’s weekday morning show earlier this year.

Mattingly “will appear across CNN platforms and dayparts delivering enterprise reporting and continuing to anchor on a fill in basis across CNN,” the network said Wednesday, announcing his new gig.

The reporter and anchor’s first assignment will be covering former President Trump’s campaign for president, the outlet noted.

“Phil Mattingly is one of the strongest political journalists and anchors we have at CNN,” said CNN CEO Mark Thompson. “As a 2016 campaign correspondent, Capitol Hill correspondent, Senior White House Correspondent and Chief White House Correspondent, Phil has risen to every challenge CNN has thrown at him.”

Mattingly’s most recent challenge at the network was replacing ousted anchor Don Lemon on “CNN This Morning,” a brainchild of former CEO Chris Licht that struggled to gain traction in the ratings after its launch.

Licht was fired last year by the network’s parent company. Thompson, his replacement, announced earlier this year he would retool the network’s morning lineup.

Mattingly had been hosting “CNN This Morning” with longtime anchor Poppy Harlow, who the network last said it was “holding discussions” with about a future role at the company.

Harlow has been with CNN since 2008.
