Fox’s Laura Ingraham calls on Romney to resign: ‘Ultimate selfish, preening, self-centered’ politician

Fox News host Laura Ingraham characterized Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) as “the ultimate selfish, preening, self-centered politician” Wednesday night and called for him to resign after his vote to convict President Trump on one article of impeachment.

“Utah’s junior senator reminded us of why he couldn’t connect with most regular, working-class people,” Ingraham said in the opening monologue of her prime-time show. “They don’t like politicians who claim to be holier than thou when they’re really just sticking a shiv in your back.”

“He’s the ultimate selfish, preening, self-centered politician,” she added.

“If he were up for reelection this year, the people of Utah would have their own payback against him because they were defrauded by Romney. For when he had to choose, he chose [Senate Minority Leader Charles] Schumer and [Sen.] Kamala [Harris] over common sense and conservatism,” Ingraham said. “If you’re one of Romney’s constituents in Utah, you’re out of luck. If you’re a business in need of a regulation reexamined, don’t bother calling his office. He has no power anymore.”

Ingraham also broached the 2012 Republican presidential nominee’s failed campaign against then-President Obama before calling for his resignation.

“We thought you’d be better for America, and the way you repay millions of people, the millions who did vote for you in 2012, is to throw in with the very people who don’t share our goals, who hate us and, by the way, who still hate you,” Ingraham said.

“Mitt, you made your stand. Now you should resign,” she later continued. “You committed a fraud on the people of Utah, on the Republican Party, on the Constitution, and have thoroughly embarrassed yourself. If I have to move there to run against him in four and a half years, I will.”

The scathing commentary came after Romney voted to convict Trump on one article in the president’s Senate trial, making him the only GOP senator to break ranks with his party in a 52-48 vote to acquit the president on the charge of abusing his power. Trump was also acquitted in the GOP-controlled Senate on the second charge of obstructing Congress.

The president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., also ripped Romney and called for him to be expelled from the GOP.

“Mitt Romney is forever bitter that he will never be POTUS. He was too weak to beat the Democrats then so he’s joining them now,” he wrote in a Wednesday tweet to his 4.3 million followers. “He’s now officially a member of the resistance & should be expelled from the @GOP.”

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called Romney’s vote to convict on Wednesday “very courageous.”
