Bill Maher warns ‘woke-y’ Democrats: ‘Trump had his best week ever,’ will be ‘hard to beat’

Bill Maher told CNN on Sunday that President Trump just had “his best week ever” while arguing that “woke-y stuff” from Democrats will make the incumbent “hard to beat” in November.

“I thought it was his best week ever, and most depressing week for me, as someone who is not a fan of Donald Trump and what he’s doing to this country,” Maher told host Fareed Zakaria.

“The other depressing thing about this week is, at his best moment the Democrats are — they just look like the gang that can’t shoot straight or can’t run straight, and if they can’t get their act together soon it’s going to be over before it begins,” Maher continued. “I mean, [Trump] won last time with nothing and now he has money, he’s been president. … I saw 44 percent of Democrats think Democrats are going to win.”

Maher also praised Trump’s “showmanship” during his State of the Union address, which included honoring 100-year-old Tuskegee Airman Brig. Gen. Charles McGee and reuniting a military family, a moment that prompted chants of “U.S.A.! U.S.A!” in the chamber.

“The showmanship that pulled out every stop with the medals and the Marine being reunited  — that’s what he does. It’s going to be hard to beat,” Maher said.

The perspective from Maher on “Fareed Zakaria: GPS” comes as a Gallup poll released last week had the president at all-time high in approval at 49 percent, a 10-point jump from October, before impeachment proceedings began.

A CBS poll conducted after the State of the Union address on Tuesday showed that 97 percent of Republicans and 82 percent of independents approved of the president’s address, as did 30 percent of Democrats.

Maher has criticized Democrats for going too far to the left in recent months on his weekly HBO program, “Real Time,” and echoed that sentiment on CNN Sunday morning.

“People read it every week, just these too-far-out left, woke-y stuff,” Maher noted before providing what he thinks is the average voter’s perspective on the choice Trump presents when compared to the Democratic alternative: “Yeah, I don’t like Trump, but he’s right, I’ve got to vote for him, they’re nuts.”

Maher occasionally does interviews on CNN, which is under the same parent company as HBO, Warner Media.
