Las Vegas newspaper endorses Biden and Klobuchar, scorches ‘non-starter’ Sanders
The Las Vegas Sun endorsed both former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) on Thursday, while warning that if Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) wins the nomination it “guarantees a Trump second term.”
The endorsements come ahead of the state’s caucuses on Feb. 22, the third nominating contest in the nation.
The editorial board of the Sun and the Las Vegas Weekly — both publications have the same owner — said Klobuchar and Biden “offer a coalition-based approach to leadership, along with abundant experience building across-the-aisle support.”
“With the nation desperately in need of a president who can restore our values and be a leader for all Americans, not just those who support him, the two are the best-suited candidates,” the editorial board wrote.
The publications also used their editorial to bash Sanders.
“Sanders is the only clear non-starter,” the editorial said. “It’s impossible not to regard the Vermont senator in a Trumplike mold—he seldom has shown an ability to build consensus and threatens to use executive orders extensively, just like Trump.”
“It’s also doubtful he could assemble a highly qualified Cabinet, meaning he’d essentially be the left wing version of Trump: isolated, angry, unable to work with others and showing too little respect for dissenting opinions. A Sanders candidacy simply guarantees a Trump second term,” it adds.
The Sun’s rival, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, was one of only two major newspapers to endorse Trump in 2016, according to an analysis by The Hill.
The New York Times last month endorsed both Klobuchar and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), the first time the newspaper has endorsed two candidates in the same race.
