MSNBC’s Deutsch advises Biden to stay home: ‘I think the less of Joe, the better’

MSNBC’s Donny Deutsch on Wednesday morning advised presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden that the best strategy would be to “stay in the basement” and continue letting President Trump “put his foot in his mouth.”

His remarks come as Biden has been doing interviews from his Delaware home, while the president continues to dominate the airwaves amid the pandemic during coronavirus task force briefings seen by millions each night.

“There is the one view that — let President Trump go out there and do what he’s doing every day, which is, you know, putting out false information and hurting himself with these public addresses,” co-host Willie Geist said.

“That’s it, you just nailed it,” Deutsch, a staunch Trump critic, said. “Let him have the stage. As we all know, an incumbent presidential election is a referendum on the incumbent. Let him get out there. Let him continually put his foot in his mouth. And the idealized version, I think the less of Joe, the better.”

Deutsch added that Biden, a former vice president, is “comfort food, we can trust him. We know he’s solid. Even if he completely disappeared and just gave the stage to Trump, that would be a win for him.”

“Donald, keep doing what you’re doing, brother,” Deutsch continued. “That’s all you gotta do to handle the Democrats. Just keep getting out there … opening your mouth, Biden will be fine. Biden, you stay in the basement.”

The RealClearPolitics (RCP) index of polls shows a tightening race since Biden was sidelined in mid-March.

The national polling average had Biden up by 7.4 points on March 20, but his lead has since shrunk to 4.4 points in the index.

Biden’s favorability rating has also dropped in recent weeks, with a Morning Consult poll released earlier this week showing 48 percent of voters viewing Biden unfavorably, with 43 percent view him favorably.

Trump’s overall approval in the RCP index stands at 45.6 percent, up from 44.1 percent on Mar. 20.
