Director Joel Schumacher dies at 80
Filmmaker Joel Schumacher, who directed films including “Batman Forever,” “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “A Time To Kill,” has died at 80 after a battle cancer, his publicist confirmed on Monday.
Schumacher was also behind Hollywood hits including “The Incredible Shrinking Woman,” “The Lost Boys” and “The Client.”
He also directed two episodes of the popular Netflix series “House of Cards” in 2013.
The former costume designer had his share of hits and misses.
“Batman Forever,” starring Val Kilmer and Nicole Kidman, had the highest-grossing opening weekend of 1995. But his next Batman film, “Batman and Robin,” which saw George Clooney replace Kilmer as the caped crusader, was savaged by reviewers.
Celebrities and critics paid their respects to the New York-born director on social media.

RIP, Joel Schumacher. I met him on the set of the ill-fated Batman & Robin and he couldn’t have been nicer or more hospitable (and the man looooved to gossip). The Incredible Shrinking Woman was an early cable TV classic for me and I loved St Elmo’s Fire, The Client and Flawless. https://t.co/lqs14WPhTm

Rest in peace, Joel Schumacher, a wildly eclectic filmmaker who made hits, bombs, Oscar winners, and Batman & Robin.

Nothing but lovely memories of my time with Joel Schumacher. Well, there was that one hellish night filming the epic House of Cards Gala. Remember that @katemara ? Still worth it for his stories.
Funny loving kind man. #RIP Joel. https://t.co/g3sCtt4v21— Michael Kelly (@michaeljkellyjr) June 22, 2020
