McEnany says Georgia’s GOP governor ‘is Stacey Abrams’ in latest attack on Kemp

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany echoed President Trump’s attacks on Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp late Monday, comparing the Republican state official to former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams.

“Gov. Kemp is no different than Stacey Abrams right now,” McEnany told Fox News’s Sean Hannity.

“She did this consent decree, and by not doing this, Governor Kemp is Stacey Abrams and that is despicable,” she added, referencing a legal settlement that Trump and his allies have falsely claimed prevents the verification of ballot signatures.

McEnany echoed the comparison in a tweet Monday night.

The Trump administration has vocally criticized Kemp and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) for their refusal to overturn the results of the presidential election in the Peach State. During McEnany’s appearance late Monday, Hannity called on Kemp to convene a special session of the state legislature to address the election results.

Trump reportedly pressured Kemp to do the same in a recent phone conversation. Kemp has said he will not call a special session and told lawmakers Monday that appointing pro-Trump presidential electors is “not an option.” The president has said he is “ashamed” of endorsing Kemp in 2018, and Sens. Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) and David Perdue (R-Ga.) have both called for Raffensperger’s resignation.

Abrams, who lost to Kemp in 2018 and has since turned her attention to voter registration efforts in the state, has been a frequent target of Trump allies. On Monday, former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) suggested without evidence that Abrams intended to “steal” votes in the state’s two Jan. 5 runoff Senate elections.

“Republicans simply have to turn out more votes than Stacey Abrams can steal,” Gingrich said on “Fox & Friends.”

“How is Stacey Abrams going to steal votes?” co-host Steve Doocy countered.

Gingrich responded by citing conspiracy theories about voter fraud in the presidential election, which Raffensperger’s office has debunked.
