NYT promotes Richard Stevenson to No. 2 spot in Washington 

The New York Times has promoted Richard Stevenson to Washington editor, the second-highest position in that office after bureau chief and assistant managing editor Elisabeth Bumiller, according to a Times announcement.

The promotion is effective immediately and gives Stevenson responsibility for the Time’s Supreme Court coverage and helping manage the bureau in addition to his previous duties as its enterprise editor.

Stevenson started in that role in 2018 and before that, worked for the Times in New York after a multi-year stint as the Europe editor, starting in 2013, in Paris and then London.

Stevenson worked in Washington before from 1996 until 2011, starting by covering economics and the White House before moving up, in 2006, to deputy bureau chief. He was also politics editor for the 2008 and 2012 elections. 

He joined the Times in 1985 as a reporter trainee before becoming a correspondent first in Los Angeles from 1986 to 1992, and then in London until 1996.

Stevenson’s promotion is the second Washington bureau staffing move this week. On Thursday, the Times announced it was hiring Elizabeth Kennedy as its White House editor. Kennedy starts in the new role April 12. 

The paper has also made several other staffing changes recently. Also on Thursday, the Times announced that senior political editor Caryn Wilson was moving to the weekend audience team.

In addition, the live news coverage team recently hired several new journalists and several weeks ago the paper revamped its White House lineup.
